Thriving Support Towards Capacity Building Through Life Skills Development
Capacity building denotes one of the three support budgets in the NDIS Plan. Specifically, the capacity-building budget is in support of long-term independence with potential funding guided by plan goals. On the whole, it covers several therapies, activities and advocacy for the NDIS participants and aged members to grow their independence, along with funded support for:
- Mental health and physical well-being
- Social activities and relationships development
- Education and training
- Living arrangements and lifestyle choices
Different from Core Support, in Capacity Building the funds are used for supporting goals specifically building on long-term independence. Usually, these are provided together with Core Supports, which ensures that the NDIS participants and aged members can do their normal daily tasks. For instance, when Core Support uses the funds to deliver meals every week, Capacity Building Support provides the necessary knowledge, skills and education for preparing healthy meals all by itself.
How helpful is capacity building?
Using the capacity-building funds, the NDIS participants and aged members can achieve different activities and goals, become more flexible, and understand and personalize care to move towards their goals. Here are some goals and activities to try using Capacity Building Funds:
- Looking for a job in the open employment market
- Using public transport or a taxi to travel
- House cleaning
- Cooking meals
- Money handling
- Personal care management
- Going for shopping
- Participation in recreational activities, such as Sports, Arts, Music, Dance and more
- Social skills and confidence building (meaning Group activities with peers)
- Attending work and other daytime activities
There are many goals and supports to choose from, and it could be hard to decide where to focus efforts. So, prioritizing needs early in plan application or reviewing is important since funding will be allocated between different categories specifically based on how to use the funds.

Strengths, challenges and aspirations of the NDIS participants and aged members are considered at the time of crafting personalized support plans.

The NDIS participants benefit from ABC CARE-organised skill workshops, with a focus on communication, independent living and social interaction.
